Excellence in Compliance

Feburary 18, 2014 — Recently there has been a communication bulletin concerning “Third-Party Components” being installed or used as replacement parts in Fire Suppression Systems. This bulletin has caused confusion and prompted phone calls from our business partners as to the accepted and approved use of Globe Fusible Links.

The facts are as follows:

  • The Globe ML and K Link are authorized for use in Fire Suppression Systems
  • Globe Fusible Links are specifically called out in the Design, Installation, and Maintenance Manuals of each manufacturer
  • Globe Fusible Links are NOT "Third-Party". The ML and K Links are an "AUTHORIZED & RECOGNIZED COMPONENT" for detection in fire suppression systems
  • Globe Fusible Links are independently Listed by Underwriters Laboratories for use in this application.
  • Globe ML and K Links for many years have been the link of choice by all Fire Suppression System Manufacturers
  • Globe exceeds UL33 testing requirements
  • Globe Links are warranted in all Systems

Globe Fusible Link Markings Explained

January 2012 - Any company who installs or services suppression systems should know that the device used for detection is a critical piece of equipment, relative to the proper functioning of the system. Whether mechanical or electrical, the detection device must operate as designed or the system will not function properly. An improperly functioning system may result in a fire with the corresponding loss of property and possibly life. In a pre-engineered suppression system that detection device will most likely be a Globe fusible link designed to release at a pre-determined temperature.

While there are a number of manufacturers of fusible links, Globe Technologies Corporation is currently the only manufacturer of Underwriters Laboratories ("UL") listed fusible links, which are also UL listed in the manuals of all of the major manufacturers of pre-engineered suppression systems. There seems to be confusion in the market, about whether Globe fusible links with certain stampings are in-fact manufactured by Globe and whether such links are any different than comparable links without these stampings. The answer is that these additional markings stamped onto a Globe fusible link do not in any way change or enhance such links and only serve to identify certain business partners of Globe who might have purchased such links from Globe. These Globe links with additional stampings are still 100% made in the USA by Globe, in Standish, MI using component materials purchased 100% in the USA.

All Globe fusible links have a UL listing obtained by Globe designating such links as a fusible release device at certain temperatures. All Globe links are stamped with the word "Globe", the style of link ("ML" or "K"), the rated temperature, the year of manufacture and the letters "UL". Additional stampings found on Globe links identifying Globe business partners might be signified with a letter or brand name. The Globe link is designated as a component part of a particular manufacturer's system as contained in such manufacturer's manual. A UL listing is received by the manufacturer of the system for use in the system and the manual.

The above approvals provide detail as to the type of Globe fusible link required in a particular manufacturer's system. However, the UL listing of a particular fusible link as a heat responsive link is obtained and maintained by Globe. Therefore, as long as the type of link specified in the manual of a particular manufacturer is installed in such manufacturer's system, the link installed will function properly either with or without the above-referenced additional stampings indicating the Globe business partners. So while servicing your customer's systems, be sure to always service them according to the manual and use the appropriate "Made in the USA" Globe fusible link. Any questions you may have on a system can usually be answered by your local manufacturer's representative for the particular brand you are servicing. Any questions you may have on Globe fusible links can be directed to an authorized distributor of the Globe product line as found on our website.
